Iridescent Pyrite After Pyrrhotite with Spherical Chalcedony from Trepca Mine Complex, Kosovo
Iridescent Pyrrhotite (Pyrite after Pyrrhotite) with Spherical Chalcedony Crystal Cluster
Thin crystal cluster "plate" of intergrown/interwoven, tabular crystals of pyrrhotite (possibly pyrite after pyrrhotite) with pretty iridescence, and spherical chalcedony crystal clusters. Beautiful contrasting shapes and iridescence in this unique piece from the famous geologic "skarn" formation at Kosovo, mined for hundreds of years at the Trepca Mines.
Size: 101 x 72 x 18 mm. 60 grams.
Pyrite after pyrrhotite pseudomorph is a mineral specimen that shows the replacement of pyrrhotite by pyrite, preserving the original shape and structure of the former. Pyrrhotite is an iron sulfide mineral that often forms hexagonal or pentagonal crystals, sometimes resembling roses. Pyrite is another iron sulfide mineral that has a higher sulfur content and a cubic crystal system. Pyrite is more stable than pyrrhotite and can replace it through a chemical reaction, resulting in a pseudomorph.
